Thermal transfer ribbons come in three main types. The right one depends on your label material and how tough the print needs to be.
Wax ribbons
The most economical option. Wax ribbons print well on paper labels and tags and suit shipping labels, retail price labels and shelf labels where the label will not face harsh handling.
Wax-resin ribbons
A blend that gives better resistance to smudging and scratching. Use wax-resin on coated paper and some synthetic labels when you need more durability than wax.
Resin ribbons
The most durable option. Resin ribbons are used on synthetic labels such as polyester and polypropylene for labels exposed to chemicals, heat, abrasion or outdoor conditions, such as asset tags and industrial labels.
Quick guide
| Label | Recommended ribbon |
|---|---|
| Uncoated / standard paper | Wax |
| Coated paper, general synthetics | Wax-resin |
| Polyester, harsh environments | Resin |
Choosing ribbon width, length and core
- Width: pick a ribbon slightly wider than your label so the full print area is covered.
- Length and core: desktop and industrial printers take different maximum ribbon lengths and core sizes, so match these to your printer model.
- Ink side: ribbons are wound ink-in or ink-out. Your printer model decides which one you need.
