UHF RFID Tags: A Practical Guide for Retail, Assets and Jewellery

RFID (radio frequency identification) tags store an ID that a reader can capture by radio, without line of sight. UHF RFID is widely used for stock counting, asset tracking and anti-loss.

How UHF RFID works

Each tag has a small chip and antenna. A UHF reader powers the tag and reads its ID from a distance, and can read many tags quickly. This makes stock counts and asset audits much faster than scanning barcodes one by one.

Choosing the right tag

  • Labels for cartons and products: adhesive UHF RFID labels can be printed and encoded on an RFID-enabled label printer.
  • Metal assets: standard tags do not read well on metal. Use on-metal tags designed for metal surfaces.
  • Small or tough items: compact and rugged tags suit tools, IT equipment and small parts.
  • Jewellery: slim RFID jewellery tags let jewellers count and trace items quickly.

What else do you need?

To print and encode RFID labels you need an RFID-enabled printer, and to read tags you need an RFID reader or a mobile computer with RFID. Tell us your application and we will advise on the right combination.
