Ordering the wrong label roll is a common and costly mistake. Check these five points before you buy.
1. Label size
Measure the width and height of the label (not the backing). Common sizes include 38 x 25mm and 50 x 25mm for product labels, 100 x 50mm for cartons and 100 x 150mm for shipping labels. Make sure the label width fits within your printer's maximum print width.
2. Print method
Decide between direct thermal and thermal transfer. Direct thermal labels print without a ribbon; thermal transfer labels need one.
3. Material
- Paper: general indoor use.
- Polypropylene: synthetic, resists moisture and tearing.
- Polyester / silver polyester: the most durable, for asset tags and labels exposed to heat, chemicals or abrasion.
4. Core size and roll diameter
The core is the cardboard tube at the centre of the roll. Desktop printers usually take 1" (25mm) cores and smaller rolls; industrial printers usually take 3" (76mm) cores and larger rolls. Check your printer's maximum roll diameter.
5. Adhesive
Permanent adhesive suits most uses. Choose removable adhesive if the label must peel off cleanly, and a high-tack adhesive for rough or difficult surfaces.
