How to Choose an ID Card Printer for Your Business

ID card printers are used for staff badges, membership cards, access cards and visitor passes. These questions will help you choose the right model.

1. Single-sided or dual-sided?

Single-sided printers print the front of the card only. Dual-sided printers print both sides in one pass, useful when the back carries terms, a barcode or emergency details.

2. Direct-to-card or retransfer?

Direct-to-card printers print straight onto the card and suit most office and corporate ID needs. Retransfer printers print onto a film that is then applied to the card, giving edge-to-edge printing and better results on uneven cards such as smart cards.

3. How many cards will you print?

Low-volume printers suit occasional badge printing; higher-volume printers handle large batches and bigger card hoppers. Estimate your monthly card volume before you choose.

4. Do you need encoding?

If your cards need magnetic stripe, contactless or smart card encoding for access control, check that the printer supports the encoding option you need.

5. Running costs

Consider the cost per card: ribbon type and image count, cards, and cleaning supplies. Half-panel ribbons reduce cost when you only need colour on part of the card.
